"Sister Mercedes and the Temple of Doom" is a collection of blog posts from playwright and author Brian C. Petti. From the depiction of the author's upbringing as a fat, shy Catholic school boy to the vagaries of family life to trying to live hand-to-mouth while on disability, "Sister Mercedes" is a sometimes hysterically funny, sometimes tragic and always human glimpse behind the veil of parenthood, marriage, pop culture and the world in general.

I really enjoyed this book. It's like episodes of a TV situation comedy, reminiscent of the old FATHER KNOWS BEST series. This father is something of a sad-sack who fails often and messes things up a lot -- long suffering and bemused. The humor took me a couple of stories to buy into and the first story didn't capture my immediate interest. I've read similar stories somewhere and heard them from other abused, failed Catholics. But I quickly warmed up to the subsequent installments as I got into them and I was wistfully disappointed when there were no more chapters to read. I particularly enjoyed a chapter in which the author shares a backwards birthday celebration that ends with him not knowing what's going to hit him. I liked spending time with this family, they screw up, but they have a sense of ordinary, every-day contentment about them. They must be doing something right, the author's boys haven't sent a copy of the book to Child Protective Services. If I had it to do again, I think I'd only allow myself one chapter a day, or just on days I needed the schadenfreude.

Sister Mercedes and the Temple of Doom edition by Brian Petti Humor Entertainment eBooks Reviews

Glad to see an author use his family to show that not all authors/stars are high priced. That family and life is about struggles and life lessons that teach you to laugh at the world. Humorously written and faced paced to keep you turning the pages to see what the next adventure will be
I LOVED IT! This book is so laughably down to earth! Hilarious at times even! Excellently written! I'm even going to look up his plays and his blog. Brian Petti is in my opinion a very versatile writer and I look forward to reading more. A definite must read...especially if you have family, a job, HECK..IF YOUR ALIVE! Well done.
This book (collection of his blogs) started out to be very funny. His descriptions of his boyhood, Catholic school education, even talking about Facebook being evil were hilarious. But then closer to the end, it turned into excerpts from his plays for you to read. I can think of nothing more boring than trying to read plays. Just couldn't force myself to finish it. So I would have to say the beginning of it rated 5 stars but the end definitely didn't.
In addition to the positive comments already posted here, I'd like to add that the blog post on made-up swear words alone is worth the price of the ebook. (It also explains how I managed to understand the gist of conversations around me while auditing a small company where most of the workers spoke only Ukrainian.) I seldom really crack up laughing, but this particular post had me groping for the Kleenex. I may eventually memorize this post and have it at the ready for really frustrating moments.

Thanks for a much needed laugh!
This book is at its best when it serves as a memoir. I enjoyed reading recollections of the author's life and respected his self-depreciating humor. Where the book fails (for me at least) is when the author shifts gears into social commentary and parenting anecdotes. At that point, it becomes too obvious that I'm reading someone's blog. So, while I skipped a lot of it, the first 1/3 to 1/2 of the book were pretty enjoyable.
This book is a funny trail through the life of a talented writer and playwright. I know he's a talented playwright because he adds bits of his plays into the book, and I found myself yearning to act again. Whilst reading this, I felt like I'd found a new friend, and was a bit sad when it ended, and we had to return to being strangers.

Brian Petti is smart, funny, and has overcome some nasty things to continue being smart and funny and full of life. I wish I was his friend, because I'd like to get to know him, his wife, and his whole family better.
I love Brian's stories for many reasons. They are funny and insightful on their own. But for me - a transplanted Southerner in Yankeeland - they go a long way to explain the benevolent (at least most of the time) institutions of Catholicism and simply being Irish in a way that probably doesn't even exist in Ireland. OK, so I don't really think they are all that benevolent - I was being nice. But these stories do make them funny! As another fat little boy, I well remember the "husky" department in department stores. I grew up in a time and place where Catholics were rare. However, my own Southern Baptist mentors taught me that all Catholics were going to hell, and now I understand why! Substitute Southern Baptist for Catholic, and although there are differences, the similarities are disturbing. I can only hope that one day I will be able to approach my childhood with the humor and sensitivity that abound in these stories.

Brian is also the universal man who is always in front of me in the ATM line. Oh, and remind me to avoid Chinese buffets with the Petti family!

Sister Mercedes is a "must read" for all.
